128: Twentieth-Century Brazilian Literature

This course is an introduction to Brazilian Literature that utilizes literary texts, films, and historical writing in order to create an overview of Brazil over time and, especially in a shifting and often difficult present.  We will examine recurring features of Brazilian literature and culture in an attempt to think about some of the innovations and transformations that Brazil faces along with the comparisons it offers to other Latin American and Portuguese-speaking countries.  Authors and filmmakers include Milton Hatoum, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Ronaldo Brito de Carvalho and Karim Ainouz.
